Introduction

Objectives: The Workshop will bring together approximately 30 international research experts, regulators from government agencies, and leading practicing engineers in the field of seismic stability of tailings dams. The objectives of the workshop are: 1) to summarize the current state-of-the-art in research and the state-of-the-practice in design in seismic analyses of tailings dams; 2) to identify research needs and to recommend strategies to funding agencies to meet these research needs; 3) to facilitate communication and collaboration between researchers, government regulatory agencies, and practicing engineers so that the results of future research will be quickly disseminated to benefit the industry and to enhance engineering education.

Proceedings: Each participant is welcome to contribute a paper, 4 to 12 pages long, on the latest development in his/her research work related to the theme of the workshop. The contribution may consist of a summary of recent research activities or a vision of future research needs. The papers will be submitted two weeks before the Workshop. The abstract of the papers will be copied and distributed at the Workshop. Paper preparation instructions will be sent to participants in September 2003. Authors will be given an opportunity to revise their papers in the month following the workshop, and the revised papers along with a summary of discussions will be included in the workshop proceedings that will be published on the web.

Expenses: The Workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Mine Safety and Health Administration through awards to the Department of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. All the essential expenses related to the workshop including the participants' travel, lodging and meals during the workshop will be paid directly by Case Western Reserve University. The Workshop will be held in Room 310A/B of the Nord Building, Case Western Reserve University. The conference room is located on the campus of the university. Hotel rooms have been reserved at the Glidden House on 1901 Ford Drive, which is about 5 minutes walk from the conference room. Participants are requested to arrive on Sunday November 9. US participants can leave Tuesday afternoon and international participants are encouraged to stay over Saturday to reduce the cost of air tickets. Round trip air ticket between the participant's nearest major airport to Cleveland Hopkins Airport, taxi fares between Hopkins airport to Glidden House, and up to four nights at the Glidden House beginning Saturday and ending with Tuesday night will be reimbursed. Continental breakfast will be offered free at the Glidden House each morning. Refreshments during the morning and afternoon sessions will be provided.
